Although only introduced to South Africa in the 16th century, your guitar was readily adapted by Zulu singers, who discovered that it complemented, instead of diluted, their vocal designs. John Bhengu’s invention, beginning in the 1950s, was to go from strumming your guitar to choosing, a skill that he performed with virtuoso skill, and which became referred to as “ukupika.” Bhengu afterwards considered the guitar, with which he appreciated an equally large success.
