Joey Dee

Joey Dee led the home music group at New York’s Peppermint Lounge, immortalizing the joint in his 1961 chart-topper “Peppermint Twist.” Delivered Joseph DiNicola in Passaic, NJ, Dee teamed with veteran manufacturer Henry Glover to cut “Peppermint Twist” for Roulette Information, and the large strike resulted in a starring function in the film Hey, Let’s Twist. The majority of Dee’s strikes, including a supercharged revival from the Isley Brothers strike “Shout” in 1962, had been tightly in the Twist setting, although he got an effective stab at a softer sound that season using a Johnny Nash tune, “THE TYPE of Love Is certainly This.” Dee provided several future superstars early breaks by inviting them in to the spinning lineup from the Starliters, like the Ronettes, three-quarters from the Youthful Rascals, and Jimi Hendrix. Dee continuing releasing material in to the mid-’70s, and point he continued to be an active pull in the oldies circuit.
