The instrumental music of 19th century Eastern Euro Jews continues to be preserved in its traditional and contemporary forms by clarinetist and ethnomusicologist Joel Rubin. A regular lecturer on early Jewish and klezmer music, as well as the director from the Klezmer Music RESEARCH STUDY, Rubin provides performed with Alicia Svigals, accordion and tsimbal participant Joshua Horowitz, and avant-garde Jewish rings Brave Old Globe and Budowitz. Originally drawn to Western european traditional and avant-garde music, Rubin spent years playing in the original Greek and French clarinet designs. He transformed his interest towards Jewish and klezmer music after hearing a pre-World Battle II documenting by klezmer clarinetist Dave Tarras. Rubin offers remained fascinated with Tarras’s recordings. His publication, Old-Time Jewish Music for Clarinet, features transcriptions of 16 tracks from Tarras’s repertoire. Rubin continues to be involved with a multitude of musical tasks. His playing was presented on Brave Aged World’s recording, Klezmer Music along with a musical version from the Biblical story, David and Goliath, offering music by Branford Marsalis and narration by Mel Gibson. Rubin may be the leader from the Joel Rubin Jewish Music Outfit, an organization that also features accordionist Claudio Jacomucci, tsimbal participant Kelman Balogh, trumpet participant Ferenc Kovacs, and violinist Laszlo Main. As well as Italian avant-garde composer and klezmer clarinetist Roberto Paci Dalo, Rubin developed Messianic Soundware, a multi-media demonstration using two clarinets, a live interactive pc program and an eight-channel audio environment. The creation was debuted on Oct 23, 1995 at Insituit Unzeit in Berlin.
