Joe Tarto

A collector’s album within the 1980s humorously billed Joe Tarto as “Titan from the Tuba.” Although Tarto was usually the least-known musician on lots of the recordings he made an appearance on within the 1920s, his fellow music artists certainly known his abilities. Tarto performed trombone when he was 12 but shortly turned to tuba. He was within the Military during World Battle I (having provided a false age group), and performed tuba within an Military band. After getting wounded and recovering, he was discharged in 1919. Carrying out a period functioning a day work, Tarto became a full-time musician in Oct 1920. He toured with Cliff Edwards, was with Paul Specht’s Music group (1922-1924), used the orchestras of Sam Lanin and Vincent Lopez, proved helpful in Broadway displays and organized for Chick Webb and Fletcher Henderson. Tarto thoroughly recorded within the ’20s (although not as a head) including with Joe Venuti, Crimson Nichols, Miff Mole, the Dorsey Brothers, Bix Beiderbecke, Phil Napoleon, Eddie Lang, Ethel Waters, the Boswell Sisters, and Bing Crosby, among numerous others. After 2 yrs with Roger Wolfe Kahn’s Orchestra, Tarto became a studio room musician within the ’30s, doubling on string bass and dealing with symphony orchestras, on radio and in the theaters. Joe Tarto sometimes performed jazz in his old age (mainly Dixieland) and he led the brand new Shirt Dixieland Brass Quintet within the ’70s and ’80s.
