Rockabilly cat Joe Cent was created Joseph Pennington in Place City, FL, in January 15, 1928. Taught to try out electric guitar by his mom, he became a member of his initial group, the Sons from the South, at age 16, and after senior high school he relocated to San Angelo, TX, to try out with the Traditional western golf swing combo Dub Adams & the K-Bar Ranch Hands. By way of a shared friend he fulfilled nation icon Hank Williams, signing up for his backing device the Drifting Cowboys in 1947 for seven dollars a display. Nicknamed “Small Joe Pennington” by Williams in response to his diminutive size, the guitarist quickly renamed himself Joe Cent.
