Joe Marsala


An excellent golf swing clarinetist who could match Dixieland settings however welcomed Dizzy Gillespie to some memorable program in 1945, Joe Marsala was the older sibling of trumpeter Marty Marsala (1909-1975) as well as the hubby of the fantastic jazz harpist Adele Girard (1913-1993). He freelanced around Chicago beginning in the past due ’20s, including with Wingy Manone and Ben Pollack. He documented with Manone within the mid-’30s, using Wingy on 52nd Road during 1935-1936. Marsala shortly became a head himself and through the next a decade (a lot of that was spent playing in the Hickory Home), he presented such part players as Adele Girard, Friend Rich (his 1st important work), Crimson Allen, Eddie Condon, Joe Bushkin, Dave Difficult, Shelly Manne, Maximum Kaminsky, and his sibling, Marty, amongst others. He retired from full-time playing in 1948, operating rather in music posting. Nevertheless, Joe Marsala continuing playing on an intermittent basis in to the 1960s. His studio room recordings from 1936-1942 are collected on the Classics CD. Various other sessions have already been released on IAJRC, Aircheck, Jazzology, Savoy, Dark & Light, Musicraft, along with a 1957 record for Stereo-Craft.
