Joe Kayser

b. 14 Sept 1891, St. Louis, Missouri, USA, d. 3 Oct 1981, Evanston, Illinois, USA. After learning in St. Louis, Kayser relocated to NY in 1917 to fill up a vacancy as drummer in the Earl Fuller Orchestra. In the beginning centered at Rector’s Cafe, his period there noticed him make the acquaintance of fellow musician Ted Lewis. During Globe Battle I Kayser created a naval foundation music group with violinist Benny Kubelsky (later on Jack port Benny). After his release he was appointed as the first choice of one from the Meyer Davis company’s several touring rings, stationed mainly in the Carolinas. He came back to St. Louis in 1921 to create his 1st dance music group under his personal name. In the beginning a quintet, with Frankie Trumbauer, David Rose, Muggsy Spanier, Jess Stacy and Gene Krupa, the group’s rates swelled as even more prestigious bookings emerged in. They travelled broadly, a lot in order that Kayser would afterwards claim that it had been he and Jan Garber that initiated the ‘one-nighter’ circuit which a lot of dance rings would stick to.
