Biography

Joe Farrell’s CTI albums of 1970-1976, which combined jointly his hard bop design with some pop and fusion components, produced him briefly well-liked by listeners unfamiliar with his previous work. Farrell started playing clarinet when he was 11 and, after graduating from the School of Illinois in 1959, he transferred to NY where he caused the Maynard Ferguson Big Music group (1960-1961) and Slide Hampton (1962), and documented with Charles Mingus, Dizzy Reece, along with a significant series with Jaki Byard (1965). An associate of both Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra (1966-1969) and Elvin Jones’ combo (1967-1970), Farrell’s exclusive sound on tenor and general flexibility were assets. An associate of the initial version of Go back to Forever (1971-1972), Farrell was pretty prosperous through the 1970s when his single CTI records marketed well, but a medication problem gradually swept up with him. After executing with Mingus Dynasty in the past due ’70s and documenting with Louis Hayes in 1983, he transferred to LA where he scuffled during his last year or two. Farrell passed away from bone cancers in 1986 at age group 48. Furthermore to CTI, Farrell documented as a head for Warner Bros., Xanadu, Modern, RealTime, Timeless, and (with Airto and Flora Purim) Guide.
