Grammy Award-winning vocalist, producer, and songwriter Jody Watley made a name for herself using the dance-soul trio Shalamar before she embarked about a single career that brought her many TOP pop hits along with a reputation as “The Queen of Awesome.” Watley was created in Chicago, Illinois, on January 30, 1959, but was raised in LA. Her teenage gig being a dancer on Spirit Train resulted in a meeting using the strike TV show’s reserving agent, Dick Griffey. Alongside Jeffrey Daniel and Gerald Dark brown, Watley was recruited by Griffey to become listed on Shalamar in 1977.
