Biography
Ambient/jazz jungle manufacturer Jamie Odell was close to the the surface of the buzz list for 1997, his Jimpster task upped by famous brands Mixmaster Morris and Coldcut. Nevertheless, as jungle’s avant-garde veered into techstep place and “ambient” and “jazz” turned from drum’n’bass adjectives to unsavory invectives, Jimpster’s charm switched through the dancefloor towards the armchair, gathering popularity rather (like Squarepusher and Cujo’s Amon Tobin) among electronica viewers. His string of EPs, released through his personal Freerange label, discovered a welcome target audience in those repelled by techstep’s murky, bleating hoovers but who craved something a bit more sophisticated compared to the moving, housey breaks and pad washes quality of all dancefloor ambient and jazz drum’n’bass. His debut full-length, Martian Arts, was a compilation of these Freerange singles, and premiered by the brand new York-based Instinct label in middle-1997. Like Squarepusher and Cujo, Odell requires his jazz impact in not necessarily apparent directions, with outcomes frequently pleasantly recalling ’70s fusion serves such as Weather conditions Survey, Herbie Hancock, and Bitches Brew-era Mls Davis without stooping to extreme sampling. Odell attracts from live program tapes documented in his studio room. Students of jazz and modern structure when he started cutting information, Odell was also among the many music artists in his family members: his mom was a jazz vocalist in the London circuit and his dad was the drummer for jazz/funk fusion combo Shakatak. Jimpster’s correct debut LP, Text messages in the Hub, premiered on Kudos in 1999 as well as the eclectic compilation Scrambled was released a year afterwards. 2002 saw the discharge of Jimpster’s second studio room album, Domestic Research. Once again not really restricted by musical limitations, the album noticed him deftly move from ’80s-inspired jazz funk to trippy deep home. That same season his focus considered beginning the improvised jazz and digital clothing the Bays, an organization that would hardly ever rehearse or discharge any music commercially within their “Functionality Is the Item” ethos. It wouldn’t end up being until 2006 that Odell came back to his Jimpster guise, launching his impeccably crafted third record, Amour, which delved deeper in to the housier side. Concentrating on his label and DJ’ing commitments, Odell’s result slowed to a small number of singles on the next couple of years and he came back in 2013 along with his 4th full-length, Porchlight & Rockingchairs. Once more featuring his right now trademark audio of clean, jazz-inflected deep home, the album relocated skillfully from dancefloor-led figures to laid-back, armchair-friendly hearing. Following a couple of remix EPs, Jimpster shipped the British Rose EP on Freerange in 2015, as the pursuing yr he teamed up with Japanese maker Kuniyuki within the Kalima’s Dance EP. By 2017, along with his label becoming in existence for a few twenty years and his remix credits achieving into triple numbers, Odell came back with his 5th full-length launch, Silent Stars.
