Biography
A prolific session participant and occasional bandleader, Jimmy Woode spent some time working with numerous bands because the later ’40s. He’s performed in combos and orchestras, led trios and supported everyone from Duke Ellington to Eric Dolphy, often providing smart, first-rate accompaniment. Woode performed baritone horn and examined piano and bass as a kid. He produced a trio after departing the program in 1946. Woode toured with Turn Phillips in 1949, after that documented with Zoot Sims and Toots Thielemans. He afterwards caused Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald and Nat Pierce in the first ’50s. Woode offered as home bassist at Storyville in Boston 2 yrs, documenting with Sidney Bechet and Billie Vacation. He caused Duke Ellington within the middle-’50s, also documented as a head in 1957 and used Johnny Hodges and Clark Terry. After shifting to Sweden in 1960, Woode became a member of the Kenny Clarke/Francy Boland Big Music group, and remained together until they disbanded in 1973. He transferred to Germany and maintained his own submitting firm, then resided in holland and Munich. Woode performed frequently for radio and tv broadcasts in addition to on film soundtracks. He made an appearance at celebrations, and documented with Don Byas, Albert Nicholas, Johnny Griffin, Sahib Shihab, Ted Curson and Booker Ervin, Milt Buckner, Benny Bailey, Mal Waldron, and Helen Humes. Woode resided in Vienna through the ’80s and proved helpful regularly with Nathan Davis’ Paris Reunion Music group.
