Jilted John

Using its simple melodies and endearing silliness, Jilted John’s song of the same name became among the U.K.’s most widely used punk/new influx novelty singles. Written and sung by professional Graham Fellows, “Jilted John” tells the storyplot of an uncomfortable teenager whose partner Julie leaves him for Gordon, a better-looking man with more cash; John spends a lot of the melody within a tantrum flinging insults on the set (“Gordon is really a moron!,” etc.). When Manchester indie label Rabid released the melody in 1978, demand was therefore frustrating that EMI stepped directly into deal with its distribution. Fellows made an appearance on several tv programs because the Jilted John personality, which helped send out the one to number 4 over the U.K. graphs. “Jilted John” was accompanied by an record, True Love Tales, which didn’t duplicate the achievement of its forerunner. Fellows came back to his performing career, including a stint over the United kingdom soap Coronation Road along with a biographical play about John Lennon.
