Jean Wiéner

Jean Wiéner was a duo-pianist and a prominent body among early France film composers. Wiéner was an early on enthusiast of composer Darius Milhaud, Jean Cocteau, and Les Six, and may be seen within their firm with regularity in the first ’30s. His profession being a film composer in fact started in the silent period through credit scoring Louis Delluc’s avant-garde film La Femme de Nulle Component (THE GIRL from Nowhere, 1922). Wiéner became disillusioned using the avant-garde, and after breaking with Cocteau’s group, came to open public prominence as an associate of a favorite piano duet with Belgian pianist Clement Doucet. From 1924 to 1939, Wiéner and Doucet documented an assortment of well-known dance strikes, jazz, and light traditional favorites and performed some 2,000 concerts. Using the outbreak of the next World Battle, Doucet dropped from the concert picture, ultimately dying in 1950. Without his partner, Wiéner made a decision to quit the concert circuit and devote his energies specifically to film rating. Among the film directors Wiéner caused carefully was Jean Renoir, especially in the 1930s, and on Renoir’s last film, Le Petite Théatre de Jean Renoir (1971); Julien Duvivier; and Robert Bresson.
