Biography
The remarkably versatile mezzo-soprano Jan DeGaetani studied voice on the Juilliard School of Music in NY with Sergius Kagen. She produced her debut in NY in 1958. Her worldwide reputation was set up when she sang the premiere of George Crumb’s Old Voices of Kids in 1970 on the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. She’s also sung the premieres of functions by Peter Maxwell Davies (A rock litany; Dark Pentecost), Richard Wernick (Visions of question and terror), William Schuman (In special music), and Elliott Carter (Syringa). Although most widely known for her performing of modern music, Jan DeGaetani sang a multitude of music which range from the middle ages Play of Herod to tunes of John Dowland, German lieder, French mélodies, and tunes of Stephen Foster and Charles Ives. During her profession, DeGaetani made an appearance with a lot of the main British and American orchestras, generally in functions by modern composers. Her regular looks using the Modern Chamber Outfit evoked many good shows, including Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire. She also made an appearance using the Chamber Music Culture of Lincoln Middle along with Speculum Musicae. Usually a smart performer, DeGaetani experienced a tone of voice with great expressive range; she was among the uncommon singers of modern music to garner not merely critical praise, but additionally popularity with everyone. In 1973, she was appointed a teacher of voice in the Eastman College of Music in Rochester, NY, where she continued to be on the faculty until her loss of life. Among her college students, the most exceptional may be the soprano Dawn Upshaw. Through the summers, she also trained in the Aspen Music Event. She often offered master classes together with her recital trips to be able to move her like of modern music to the next generation.
