Jack Yellen

Biography

Pop lyricist Jack port Yellen was most dynamic through the 1920s and ’30s, composing ratings with songwriting partner Milton Ager for Broadway and later on composing screenplays for Hollywood. Created in Poland in 1892, Yellen found the U.S. at age five and finally attended the University or college of Michigan. After graduation, he worked well for a short while like a N.Con. newspaper reporter just before taking on songwriting in the first ’10s. He began composing for vaudevillian Sophie Tucker and developed among her biggest strikes in 1935, “My Yiddish Momme.” Yellen ultimately finished up co-owner from the publisher Ager-Yellen-Bernstein Music Organization. Just some of the countless Broadway musicals he obtained are What’s inside a Name? (1920), Rainfall or Glow (1928), You Said It (1931), and Children Together (1940). Furthermore to primarily collaborating with Milton Ager, Yellen caused additional composers like Lew Pollack and Sammy Fain. A few of his most effective and enduring tunes consist of “Hard Hearted Hannah,” “Alabama Jubilee,” “Cheatin’ on Me,” “I Question What’s Become of Sally,” “Ain’t She Nice,” “Content Days Are Right here Once again,” and “Sing, Baby, Sing.” Yellen later on wrote several screenplays for Hollywood, some of that are Pig-Skin Parade, Like Is News, AWAKEN and Live, and so many more. Through the 1950s and ’60s, Yellen once again used songwriting for Sophie Tucker.

#Fact
1 Inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1972.
2 In 1959, Yellen attended the fiftieth anniversary reunion of his high school graduating class. As the writer of such standards as "Happy Days Are Here Again," "My Yiddishe Momma," and "Ain't She Sweet?," he was the class celebrity. The only unimpressed person was his former English teacher, who upbraided him with, "So you're the one who wrote that 'Ain't She Sweet?'. And I thought I tought you that 'ain't' is bad grammar!"
3 As a Republican, Yellen's feelings were mixed when the Democrats chose "Happy Days" as the anthem of Roosevelt's 1932 campaign.
