Jack port Maher served simply because the publisher from the renowned jazz newspaper Down Defeat from 1968 to 2002. Maher obtained the newspaper when the prior publisher — his dad John — passed away, outbidding Playboy’s Hugh Hefner for the privileges. Maher oversaw Down Beat’s most successful period, when it grew into perhaps one of the most reputed jazz publications available on the market, and followed more progressive insurance policies about offering African-American music artists on its cover. He also sometimes contributed liner records to jazz recordings in the past due ’50s and ’60s. In 2002, Maher rejected Beat to longtime staffer Frank Alkyer, finishing a reign greater than three years. He passed on from organic causes on ROMANTIC DAYS CELEBRATION, 2003.
