Jack Kelly & His South Memphis Jug Band

Jack port Kelly & His South Memphis Jug Music group rivaled the Memphis Jug Music group in popularity through the 1930s and continued taking part in in to the 1950s, when jug rings were a rarity. Founded in the first ’30s by guitarist and vocalist Jack port Kelly, the music group included fiddler Will Batts, acoustic guitar picker Dan Sane, and “Doctor” D.M. Higgs on jug. These were originally known as Jack port Kelly’s Jug Busters if they 1st entered the documenting studio room in August, 1933. In this trip, the music group cut tunes including “Crimson Ripe Tomato vegetables,” and “Believe I’ll RETURN HOME” for the NY label, American Information Co. The tunes were released beneath the fresh music group name, Jack port Kelly & His South Memphis Jug Music group, and one quantity, “Highway No. 61 Blues,” became a best-seller to them. The group was thought to be the bluesiest of Memphis region jug rings, and were popular as live performers.
