Atkins studied in Truro and Hereford and served seeing that the organist in Worcester Cathedral until 1950. He aimed the Worcester Three Choirs Celebrations for 50 years, and even though he had not been a gifted conductor, he was effective in broadening the repertoire from the celebrations. He worked carefully using the composer Elgar to create English editions from the functions of Bach and various other musicians.
