Biography

Brazilian tenor saxophonist Ivo Perelman is certainly a remarkably successful recording artist known for combining basic Brazilian folk themes using the techniques of free of charge jazz. While he has well in the seriously distorted, abstract-expressionist vein initial tapped within the ’60s with the Albert Ayler, he also matches effectively alongside his likewise willing contemporaries like Elliott Levin and Ken Simon. Delivered in Sao Paulo in 1961, Perelman performed classical electric guitar, cello, clarinet, trombone, and piano while we were young. At age 19 he followed the tenor saxophone as his major device. After arriving within the U.S., he went to the Berklee College of Music in Boston to get a semester before falling out (Perelman can be purportedly a mainly self-taught participant). Perelman’s moves got him to LA in 1986, where he researched privately and performed. His initial record, Ivo from 1989, presented an all-star solid that included drummer Peter Erskine, bassist John Patitucci, percussionist Airto, and vocalist Flora Purim, amongst others. Also for this period, Perelman relocated to NY. Through the ’90s, he founded his personal Ibeji label, liberating albums like Soccer Property and Tapeba Tunes. Ever explorative, in 1997 Perelman mixed Jewish music and avant-garde jazz, producing En Adir: Traditional Jewish Tunes for the Music & Arts label. Quite prolific, Perelman documented frequently with players from the avant-garde; he’s produced albums using the bassist Dominic Duval, pianist Borah Bergman, drummers Rashied Ali and Jay Rosen, and pianists Marilyn Crispell and Matthew Shipp, to mention just a couple. Within the 2000s, Perelman continuing his busy documenting schedule, pairing frequently with pianist Shipp, in addition to exciting collaborators like violinist Mat Maneri, guitarist Joe Morris, drummer Gerald Cleaver, among others. Several efforts were released via Leo Information including such albums as 2011’s The Hour from the Celebrity, 2012’s Clairvoyant, 2014’s Publication of Sound, and 2016’s Blue. Also in 2016, Perelman released six quantities of a string on Leo known as The Art from the Improv Trio. An identical series describing his collaboration with Shipp, the seven-volume The Artwork of Perelman-Shipp, made an appearance in 2017.
