ImaJinary Friends

A side project featuring people from the Brian Jonestown Massacre, Tipsy, and Swervedriver, San Francisco’s the ImaJinary Close friends were a short-lived exercise marrying trippy psychedelic rock, synthesizer experiments, and ambient sounds right into a freaky, sometimes unsettling blend. The initial lineup of the group contains Jeremy Davies on vocals, sampler, and synthesizer; Tim Digulla on consumer electronics and tape manipulation; Rick Maymi on acoustic guitar, bass, drums, and consumer electronics; Travis Threlkel on acoustic guitar and sampler; and previous Swervedriver drummer Graham Bonnar on percussion. This lineup documented the group’s singular full-length recording, 1994’s Lunchtime in Infinity, for Greg Shaw’s estimable Bomp! label. After Bonnar still left, all of those other group recorded several new tracks in the home in 1995. However, these new music continued to be unreleased until 2000, when Pete “Sonic Increase” Kember of Range agreed to place them from his very own Space Ace Recordings label. The causing discharge was a divided CD with the ImaJinary Close friends and Spectrum known as Interface/Arrive Out to Play.
