Illa J

After the passage of his brother, Detroit producer/MC Jay Dee, Illa J (blessed John Yancey) dropped out of Central Michigan University, reserve his inhibitions, and stepped out as an MC and producer. Previously cautious about living up to the genius-level regular established by his elder sibling, Illa J became noticeable outside his regional group through the video for his brother’s “Won’t Perform” — where he was proven lip-syncing the rhymes — aswell as the Dilla Transformed MY ENTIRE LIFE tour, which allowed him to execute for Dilla admirers throughout the world. Then he got into documenting, collaborating with famous brands Karriem Riggins, Guilty Simpson, Dark Milk, and Small Brother’s Big Pooh. A self-released EP was released in 2007, offering self-productions, apart from one monitor (“Me and MY BUDDY”) made by Jay Dee.
