Biography

The songwriting team of composer Hugh Martin and lyricist Ralph Blane earned their greatest renown for Meet up with Me personally in St. Louis, the traditional 1944 Vincente Minnelli film musical that released the perennials “Possess Yourself a Merry Small Xmas” and “The Trolley Tune.” Delivered August 11, 1914, in Birmingham, AL, Martin researched piano at Birmingham College or university prior to making his Broadway debut performing within the 1937 creation Hooray for What? Then teamed with castmate Blane to create the vocal quartet the Four Martins, additionally organizing vocals for several stage productions, including One your money can buy, Too Many Women, DuBarry Was a female, Cabin in the Sky, and Louisiana Buy. In 1941, Martin and Blane had written their very own Broadway smash, Greatest Foot Forwards, which yielded the tracks “Buckle Down, Winsocki” and “Ev’ry Period”; they shortly journeyed to Hollywood to adapt the task for MGM. The duo continued to be in Tinseltown, authoring “The Joint IS ACTUALLY Jumpin’ (In Carnegie Hall)” for 1943’s Hundreds Cheer before embracing Match Me in St. Louis, which also included their “The Youngster NEARBY.” Efforts to 1944’s Ziegfeld Follies (“Appreciate”) and 1947’s VERY GOOD NEWS (“Move That Peace Tube”) implemented, and aside from Blane, Martin also came back to the level for tasks including 1948’s Appear, Ma, I’m Dancin’!, 1951’s Create a Desire, and 1952’s Like from Judy, the last mentioned written with vocalist Timothy Grey. Martin and Blane reunited to rating the 1954 film Anthea, implemented a year afterwards by THE LADY Hurry; in 1960, the duo also constructed several new tracks to get a stage version of Match Me in St. Louis made by the St. Louis Municipal Opera. They added yet even more new material once the present finally reached Broadway in 1989. Hugh Martin passed away on March 11, 2011 at his house in Encinitas, CA; he was 96 yrs . old.
