HORSE the Band

California’s Equine the Music group debuted in 2003 with R. Borlax, a loud but certainly leading light within the burgeoning post-hardcore subgenre of Nintendocore (wherein music artists use specific equipment to imitate the noises of Nintendo video games). They came back in 2005 with Mechanical Hands, which was made by Matt Bayles (Isis, Norma Jean) and released with the Koch imprint Fight. Nathan Winneke (vocals), Erik Engstrom (tips), Eli Green (drums), David Isen (electric guitar), and Dashiell Arkenstone (bass) demonstrated very much tighter a device, incorporating skewed melodies and true dynamics to their freaky sonic stew. Nevertheless, aside from the nods to recognizable framework, HORSE the Music group were still mainly enamored of screamo breaks, unstable rhythms, Locust-like non-sense philosophy in the mike, and blasts of squelch. These were also humorously unstable; when asked to cite grounds for dropping away from a summer months tour in 2006, the music group explained that these were in Chicago consuming pizza, and the meals was way too great to leave. Afterwards that year, Equine the Band continuing the joke by liberating the Pizza EP (made up of five odes towards the Italian meals). 2007 noticed the release from the band’s third full-length, AN ALL NATURAL Loss of life, which also presented substitute drummer Chris Prophet. Eager Living, the band’s 4th full-length studio recording, found its way to 2009.
