In past due 2015, Ohioan Jonathan Hoonch Kim and Brazilian local Gabriel Navo Rodrigues parted ways using their former band, Walla, to create their own duo, Hoonch (stylized as HØØNCH). With multi-instrumentalist Kim managing vocals and songwriting and Rodrigues on vocals and keyboards, the set debuted their liquid indie electronic appear on first solitary “Best,” a feel-good dosage of sunlight masking somber lyrics about conquering dependency. Their genre-blending audio incorporates dance components from disco and hip-hop, using a playful indie rock and roll sensibility, which recalls M83, MGMT, Interest Pit, and BØRNS.
