Herbie Fields

A fine swing period participant who wasn’t in a position to completely switch to bop, Herbie Areas attended Juilliard from 1936 to 1938, then used Raymond Scott, Leonard Ware, and Hot Lip area Web page. He led a music group at Fort Dix within the Army through the early ’40s. Areas became a member of Lionel Hampton’s music group after his release, dealing with him until 1945 and documenting at Carnegie Hall. After that Areas led small organizations and big rings from 1944 until 1950, earning Esquire magazine’s New Celebrity honor in 1945 on alto sax and later on documenting with Kilometers Davis. Areas’ career dropped in the ’50s, and he started making right pop music, leaving jazz.
