Helen Humes

Helen Humes was a flexible singer equally qualified on blues, golf swing standards, and ballads. Her cheerful design was generally a joy to listen to. As a kid, she performed piano and body organ in cathedral, and produced her initial recordings (ten blues music in 1927) when she was just 13 and 14. Within the 1930s, she caused Stuff Smith and Al Sears, documenting with Harry Adam in 1937-1938. In 1938, Humes became a member of Count number Basie’s Orchestra for 3 years. Since Jimmy Hurrying specific in blues, Helen Humes mainly got stuck performing pop ballads, but she do a fine work. After freelancing in NY (1941-1943) and touring with Clarence Like (1943-1944), Humes transferred to LA. She begun to record being a head and had popular in “Be-Baba-Leba”; her 1950 primary “Million Money Secret” is really a basic. Humes occasionally performed with Jazz in the Philharmonic, but was mainly an individual in the 1950s. She documented three outstanding albums for Modern during 1959-1961, and got tours with Crimson Norvo. She shifted to Australia in 1964, time for the U.S. in 1967 to deal with her ailing mom. Humes was from the music business for quite some time, but made a complete return in 1973, and remained busy until her loss of life. Throughout her profession, Helen Humes documented for such brands as Savoy, Aladdin, Mercury, Decca, Dootone, Modern, Classic Jazz, Dark & Blue, Dark Lion, Jazzology, Columbia, and Muse.
