Haven Gillespie

Best-remembered for his seasonal regular “Santa Claus Is certainly Arriving at Town,” lyricist Haven Gillespie was created February 6, 1888, in Covington, KY. While functioning being a typesetter for the Cincinnati Times-Star, he started his songwriting profession in 1911 by offering lyrics to an area vaudeville work, but kept onto his time job for several years, ultimately preserving his membership within the International Typographic Union until his loss of life. Gillespie have scored his first main strike with 1925’s “Drifting and Fantasizing”; another season yielded “Breezin’ Combined with the Air flow,” co-written with regular collaborator Dick Whiting. “With the Sycamore Tree” implemented in 1931 and 3 years afterwards, Gillespie have scored his most long lasting strike with “Santa Claus Is certainly Coming to City,” created with composer J. Fred Coots in the area of the 15-minute NY subway trip; the tune debuted on Eddie Cantor’s Thanksgiving radio particular on the insistence of Cantor’s wife, Ida, and within weeks its sheet music was offering more than 25,000 copies daily. 1936’s “You Head to My Mind” was authored within the wake of an extended night at an area speakeasy and was eventually recorded by performers including Billie Vacation, Lena Horne, and Peggy Lee. 1949’s “That Lucky Aged Sun,” in the meantime, was lower by everyone from Frank Sinatra to Louis Armstrong to Jerry Lee Lewis. An associate from the Songwriters Hall of Popularity, Gillespie passed away in NEVADA on March 14, 1975; ten years afterwards, George Strait protected his “Best or Wrong” (created in 1921), credit scoring the ASCAP Nation Music Award along the way.
