Harry White

Light was an accomplished trombonist who all used Elmer Snowden, Claude Hopkins, Duke Ellington, and Cab Calloway, amongst others, yet his most crucial contribution to pop lifestyle might have been the invention of the term “jitterbug.” Calloway trumpeter Edwin Swayzee allegedly noticed White utilize the phrase; Swayzee later composed a tune entitled “The Jitterbug.” Calloway documented it in 1934 and the term entered common use. White performed drums in his teenagers. He transferred to Washington D.C. around 1919 and followed the trombone as his principal instrument. White proved helpful in Washington with Ellington, Snowden, and Hopkins through the early ‘20s, prior to starting a family music group, the Light Brothers Orchestra, in 1925. The music group played a normal gig in Philadelphia; Light also journeyed and performed frequently in NY. He used Luis Russell and led another group in the past due ‘20s. In 1931 he caused Mills Blue Tempo Band (called after its supervisor, the impresario Irving Mills. White colored became a member of Calloway in 1932 and worked well as an arranger, composer, and trombonist. In 1935 he came back towards the Russell music group, which was after that support Louis Armstrong. White colored stopped playing for a while in the middle ‘30s, before becoming a member of the music group of drummer Manzie Johnson (with whom he’d sometimes play alto saxophone).
