Harry South

b. Henry Percy South, 7 Sept 1929, London, Britain, d. 12 March 1990, London, Britain. South performed piano from an early on age and in addition researched composing and organizing. In the first 50s he was playing in a variety of London-based dance and jazz rings including that led by drummer Basil Kirchin. He led his personal small group and in addition organized for Ronnie Scott’s music group. In the middle-50s he used Tubby Hayes, Sandy Dark brown, Vic Ash, Cab Kaye among others. Within the last few years from the 10 years he was noticed with Joe Harriott, John Dankworth and was a person in the Ronnie Ross-Bert Courtley Jazztet. In the first 60s he performed in India inside a music group that included Dick Morrissey with whom he continuing to operate for another couple of years. The past due 60s noticed a reunion with Harriott where time he previously also become musical movie director for Georgie Popularity, a role by which he’d continue for quite some time. His albums with Popularity because the Harry South Big Band had been memorable pieces of jazz conference pop. He was also a long-term musical associate of Annie Ross. Intermittently, from 1960 South got led a large music group that was sponsor to numerous of London’s finest jazz music artists. Among his many compositions may be the ‘Portraits’ suite created for the Country wide Youngsters Jazz Orchestra. Enormously well known among his fellow music artists, South’s contribution to English jazz is excellent although regularly undersung.
