Hal Russell

Nearly a Fred Anderson-esque elder statesman, rather than an AACM member, Hal Russell was non-etheless a crucial hyperlink between Chicago’s fertile avant-garde jazz picture from the ’60s and its own renaissance within the ’90s. Russell helped keep carefully the flame burning through the ’80s along with his NRG Outfit, a freewheeling clothing in a position to execute Russell’s limited compositions while echoing his surreal, nearly vaudevillian love of life. Given birth to in Detroit on August 28, 1926, Russell started playing drums at age group four, but majored in trumpet at university; he consequently drummed in a number of big rings, including those of Woody Herman and Boyd Raeburn. Through the ’50s, Russell freelanced around Chicago, playing classes and golf club gigs. In 1959, he became a member of the Joe Daley Trio, whose 1963 Newport arranged was reputedly among the first free jazz shows. Unfortunately, soon after completing the semi-autobiographical record The Hal Russell Tale, heart problems stated Russell’s lifestyle in Sept 1992. Thankfully, archival produces trickled out gradually over the following decade.
