Using the brutal suppression of Tibet with the Chinese government, in 1959, Tibetan Buddhist Monks in the Gyuto Tantric University joined the Dalai Lama, spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhists, in fleeing their homeland and establishing a government-in-exile in northern India. In 1988, 21 years old monks journeyed to america and used their particular multi-tonal chanting to create focus on their plight. Beneath the assistance of ethnomusicologist and Pleased Deceased percussionist Mickey Hart, the group documented an album, Independence Chants IN THE Roofs Of The Globe, at George Lucas’ Skywalker Ranch Studios in north California.
