Gus Jenkins

b. 24 March 1931, Birmingham, Alabama, USA, d. Dec 1985, LA, USA. Like a lot of his era, Jenkins drew his affects from 40s blues and spent a lot of his mature profession adapting towards the needs of rock and roll ‘n’ move and R&B. As his first recordings for Chess and Area of expertise present, Jenkins, like Jimmy McCracklin, modelled himself on St. Louis pianist Walter Davis. Both generally unissued sessions occurred in 1953 and highlighted ‘Cold Like’ and ‘Mean And Bad’, which along with ‘Eight Ball’ and ‘I Ate THE INCORRECT Part’, had been predicated on Davis originals. Thereafter, Jenkins documented thoroughly for Combo and Display, before he began his very own Pioneer label in 1959. Many of these recordings had been piano or body organ instrumentals along with his or Mamie Perry’s vocals. He continuing this plan through the first 60s with some singles on General Performers. Later in the 10 years, he changed into Islam and assumed the name Jaarone Pharoah.
