Sparse and poorly documented sessions are unfortunately the foundation of Gray Ghost’s (given birth to Roosevelt Thomas Williams) fame. A thrilling, if erratic, Tx barrelhouse pianist who was simply active because the ’20s, Gray Ghost enjoyed hook career increase in the ’90s. Apart from older enthusiasts who’d noticed him experimenting Austin and hardcore enthusiasts, few people understood anything about the Ghost before LP Gray Ghost surfaced on Catfish. A reissue of 1965 field recordings, its horrendous documenting quality obscured the frequently fascinating rhythms and his spirited vocals. But following its appearance, the Ghost was presented at several celebrations, and was noticed on the “Bluestage” display for National Open public Radio in 1994.
