Gregor Piatigorsky

Gregor Piatigorsky began performing the cello at age seven and was admitted towards the Moscow Conservatory at 9, learning there with Alfred von Glehn. In 1919, he became a member of the Lenin Quartet and was appointed primary cellist from the Bol’shoy Movie theater Orchestra. In 1921, Piatigorsky still left the Soviet Union, likely to Leipzig by method of Warsaw, and researched for a while with Julius Klengel. Furtwängler appointed him primary cellist from the Berlin Philharmonic in 1924 where he arrived to contact with the primary German musicians of that time period, including Schnabel and Flesch, with whom he shaped a trio.
