Grabass Charlestons

To paraphrase the outdated jelly manufacturer’s slogan, using a name just like the Grabass Charlestons, it must be great…or, at the minimum, entertainingly silly. This goofy pop-punk trio from Gainesville, FL, is certainly just as cheerfully vulgar and unapologetically giggly as their name, supported with a good line in the type of simple pop-punk that produced Lookout! Records well-known. Shaped in the north Florida college city of Gainesville in 1999, the Grabass Charlestons contain vocalist and bassist Dave Drobach, guitarist PJ Fancher (pronounced “peej,” much less in Ms. Harvey), and vocalist and drummer Will Thomas. The Grabass Charlestons agreed upon to Gainesville’s pre-eminent pop-punk label, No Idea Information, in 2003. The band’s initial discharge was a divide Compact disc with another Gainesville punk music group, Billy Reese Peters, that also features Fancher on electric guitar and Thomas on drums. Although released in early 2004, the recordings upon this divide CD were currently several years outdated, dating from 1999 through 2001. It had been followed almost instantly with the Grabass Charlestons’ correct debut album, THE BEST Tale Ever Hula’d, that was documented in 2002 and 2003 and includes a rocked-up cover of Tom Waits’ “Cool Cool Surface” amid the originals. The Grabass Charlestons’ second record, Ask Tag Twain, premiered by No Idea in the summertime of 2005.
