Dreadlocked San Diego-bred yoga instructor Sumach Ecks (who also moves under the brands Sumach Valentine and Randy Johnson) converted from rapping using the Masters from the Universe staff and DJ’ing with Killowattz to spotlight his single endeavors beneath the name Gonjasufi. In 2006, around enough time he relocated from seaside shores towards the desert to instruct yoga in NEVADA, he crossed pathways with underground hip-hop staples Gaslamp Killer and Traveling Lotus while going to Los Angeles, as well as the three set up a connection. Ecks, who was simply producing lo-fi psychedelic hip-hop for his very own enjoyment (generally on CD-Rs), recruited both beatmakers to create tracks for him, which he’d later enhance along with his exclusive raspy vocals. Tough mixes led him to an area on Warp in 2008. After Ecks spent more than a season mixing the record down with AGDM at Sterling silver Lake, and launching the 7″ singles “Ancestors” and “Kowboyz & Indians,” the full-length A Sufi along with a Killer premiered in March of 2010. A remix record entitled The Caliph’s Tea Party implemented later that season, and initially of 2012 he released his follow-up, a moody mini-album entitled MU.ZZ.LE. He released a divide EP with Ras G in 2013, and produced guest performances on albums by Perera Somewhere else, Awol One & Gel Roc, as well as the Insect. He came back to Warp in 2016 using the full-length Callus. The Mandela Impact adopted in 2017, including remixes of Callus songs by Daddy G (Substantial Attack), Ruler Britt, Shabazz Palaces, among others, and a cooperation with Afro-beat drummer Tony Allen.
