Biography

Although he had not been a global conducting star, Gianandrea Gavazzeni was perhaps one of the most well known and dependable of opera conductors, considered among the great preservers from the authentic Verdi tradition at La Scala. He was also a composer, but renounced that profession. At age 11 he got into the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome, learning piano there from 1921 to 1924. In 1925, he got into Milan Conservatory, staying there through 1931. His principal area of research was composition, generally under Ildebrando Pizzetti.
