Getatchew Mekurya

Created in 1935, Ethiopian jazz saxophonist Getatchew Mekurya rose to prominence after taking part in within the Municipality Music group and, especially, the authorities Music group with the mid-’60s. His 1972 recording Negus of Ethiopian Sax (reissued within the Ethiopiques series) helped set up Mekurya like a perfect proponent of the burgeoning African jazz motion. Through the 2000s, the Ethiopian musician gained even greater presence due to a continuing association with Dutch post-punk music group the Ex, towards the extent of experiencing the European music group back him through to the 2006 recording Moa Anbessa. Getatchew Mekurya passed away in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in Apr 2016 at age 81.
