George Morrow will be best known to be the bassist within the Clifford Brown-Max Roach Quintet from 1954-56. An excellent swinging accompanist rather than main soloist, Morrow hardly ever became as well well-known. He began on violin, turned to cello when he was 13 and some years later completely turned to bass. Morrow examined at the Great Arts Conservatory in LA, served within the armed service from 1943-46 and freelanced in L.A. He used Charlie Parker, Sonny Criss, Teddy Edwards, Hampton Hawes along with other musicians who have been around. Morrow spent five years in SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA (1948-53), often showing up at Bop Town and continuing to utilize the who’s who of contemporary jazz (including Dexter Gordon, Wardell Grey, Billie Vacation and Sonny Clark). Morrow became a member of the Dark brown/Roach Quintet (with whom he regularly documented) in 1954. Once the music group was reformed following the tragic fatalities of Clifford Dark brown and Richie Powell within a 1956 motor vehicle accident, the bassist remained with Roach’s Quintet into 1958, also documenting with Sonny Rollins on some of his schedules. After departing Roach, Morrow mainly played beyond the jazz main leagues although he previously an on-and-off association with Anita O’Day in to the middle-1970s. He transferred to Florida in 1976 and was an associate of the home music group at Disney Globe. Morrow hardly ever led his very own record time but he is able to be noticed at his greatest with the Dark brown/Roach Quintet.
