George Johnson

b. 25 Apr 1913, Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA. Early in his profession Johnson performed clarinet with Zack Whyte’s territory music group and with Benny Carter. In the middle-30s, he travelled to European countries in a music group associated trumpeter-entertainer Freddy Taylor even though in France used Willie Lewis and in addition documented with Garnet Clark. Staying in France, Johnson led his very own music group at nightclubs in Paris after that, on the outbreak of battle in European countries, he came back to the united states and became a member of Frankie Newton and afterwards proved helpful in Raymond Scott’s well-known broadcasting music group. Also today playing alto saxophone, he was an associate from the John Kirby Sextet before time for European countries where he produced his own music group for engagements in Spain, France and various other countries before settling in holland. His recordings had been few, a small number of edges for Spanish Columbia Information in 1947 plus some for French HMV Information, none which appear to have already been reissued on either vinyl fabric or Compact disc. Although he has been an achieved participant, Johnson’s decision to try out outside the primary jazz centres during essential intervals in his profession has led to unwarranted obscurity. (He shouldn’t be baffled with tenor saxophonist George Johnson from the Wolverines.)
