The Dave Brubeck Quartet featuring alto saxophonist Paul Desmond had its first successes in the first ’50s, nonetheless it wasn’t before addition of drummer Joe Morello (in 1956) and Gene Wright (in 1958) the fact that classic quartet took its final shape. The music group was enormously well-known; Brubeck himself acquired appeared in the cover of your time journal in 1954, as well as the band’s 1959 recording PERIODS became the very first jazz LP to market greater than a million copies. Wright’s contribution was important; his superb time-keeping (and Morello’s tastefully dextrous drumming) created the key underpinnings for the leader’s tests in odd period meters and polyrhythms. Wright started playing cornet in college before switching to bass. During his early twenties, he led his personal music group, the Dukes of Golf swing, which sometimes included saxophonist Crimson Holloway and the favorite Chicago vocal group the Dozier Kids, amongst others. (A arranger/composer by the name of Sonny Blount wrote most or all the band’s publication; he later on became famous by way of a different name: Sunlight Ra.) The music group recorded several edges for the Aristocrat label before Wright disbanded the group therefore he could sign up for Count Basie. Through the ’40s and ’50s, Wright also used such music artists as saxophonists Gene Ammons and Arnett Cobb, pianist Vince Guaraldi, clarinetist Friend DeFranco, and vibists Cal Tjader and Crimson Norvo, before getting the gig with Brubeck. Following the Brubeck quartet’s demise in 1967, Wright performed college concerts for a while, then became a member of pianist Monty Alexander’s trio in 1971. After departing Alexander’s music group in 1974, Wright worked well in Television and film. He also became more vigorous as an educator, providing as chairman from the University or college of Cincinnati’s jazz division. Wright continued to execute reunion concerts with Brubeck over time, especially in 1976 in a celebration from the quartet’s 25th wedding anniversary.
