The associates of Gardens prefer to discuss living a sustainable way of living, community involvement as well as the virtues of frugality, but do not get the idea that they are hippies — this Detroit-based combo plays tough, wiry guitar-centered garage rock with a solid R&B influence, an undertow of art-damaged psychedelia, and a dash of pop melodicism. Backyards were produced in 2007 by guitarist and vocalist Jeffrey Thomas and bassist Vincent Mazzola, who initial met if they teenagers likely to the same YMCA on Detroit’s East Aspect. Thomas was an associate from the two-piece experimental group Genders, while Mazzola (whose uncle Joey Mazzola was an associate of Sponge as well as the Detroit Cobras) and drummer Julian Spradlin (who agreed upon on in 2008) had been fixtures in the Detroit music picture. Guitarist Matt Mueller became a member of Gardens in ’09 2009, but just lasted a couple of months in the lineup before parting methods. Backyards went in to the studio room with Warren Defever of His Name Is certainly Alive portion as manufacturer, and their first full-length record, simply titled Landscapes, was released in-may 2011. Among the songs within the recording, “Matt Period,” was documented during Matt Mueller’s tenure with Landscapes, and he rejoined the group like a full-time member this year 2010.
