The older brother of Chuck Mangione, Gap Mangione has spent the majority of his career surviving in his native Rochester. Through the 1960-65 period, both Mangiones played jointly regularly within the bebop group the Jazz Brothers, documenting three boppish albums for Riverside from 1960-61. Once the band split up, Difference remained in Rochester, leading his very own trio. After Chuck began becoming famous, Difference rejoined him on an intermittent basis from 1970-72; nevertheless, he has mainly trained piano in Rochester after that. As a head, Difference recorded a set of commercial big music group dates (organized by sibling Chuck) for GRC in 1971 and Mercury in 1972.
