Fuchsia

The British band Fuchsia released a little-noticed self-titled album in 1971 that, true to its name, was a fusion of varied currents of early-’70s rock, particularly progressive rock and British folk-rock. While guitarist and business lead vocalist Tony Durant was Fuchsia’s primary motor because the composer of a lot of the materials, the band’s key distinguishing tag was its three-woman string section, including cellist Madeleine Bland (who also performed piano and harmonium) and violinists Janet Rogers and Vanessa Hall-Smith; all three also added support vocals. With pretty tuneful folk-rock-pop-ish music whose progressions are unconventional more than enough that you frequently have no idea quite where they’re heading, it’s a fascinating effort, if not really a wholly effective one.
