Gjerstad was drawn to free of charge jazz after hearing albums by Eric Dolphy and, most influentially, Albert Ayler. The effect was a Scandinavian tour that same calendar year with two outstanding U.S. music artists: bassist William Parker and percussionist Hamid Drake.
