A South African Afro-fusion strap, Freshlyground came collectively in Cape City in 2002. Led by vocalist Zolani Mahola, and offering Simon Attwell on flute, mbira and harmonica, Peter Cohen on drums, Kyla Rose Smith on violin, Julio “Gugs” Sigauque on classical guitar, Josh Hawks on bass electric guitar and Seredeal “Shaggy” Scheepers on keyboards and percussion, Freshlyground combined traditional kwela and African folk with jazz, blues and an indie rock and roll sensibility right into a distinct and refreshing design and audio. The group released a debut record, Jika Jika, in 2003, pursuing it with Nomvula in 2004, Ma’ Cheri in 2007, and Radio Africa this year 2010.
