The death of Frankie Kennedy, from cancer, in later 1993, was a tragic loss for fans of Celtic and Irish music. Among Irish music’s most charismatic instrumentalists, Kennedy have been the guiding power behind Altan, the tradition-based music group that he produced along with his wife, Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh. Based on the Irish Moments, “The news headlines of (Kennedy’s) loss of life is simply intolerable. One can state all the normal things about an excellent traditional musician at his loss of life, yet, though accurate, in Frankie’s case, they might not even commence to capture the wonder of the person, radiantly evident even though he was going through chemotherapy.” A previous schoolteacher, Kennedy fulfilled fiddle participant, vocalist, and instructor Ni Mhaonaigh in Gweedore, State Donegal, in the past due ’80s. Writing a like of traditional Irish music, they begun to play jointly being a duo. Wedded in 1981, they documented an record, Ceol Aduaidh, 2 yrs later. Quitting their teaching positions to devote their full-time focus on music in 1985, they produced Altan with bouzouki participant Ciaran Curran and guitarist/vocalist Tag Kelly. Their initial album using the band premiered in 1987. The next season, the group was extended to some quintet by adding fiddle participant Paul O’Shaughnessy. The quintet documented two albums — Equine With a Center in 1998 as well as the Crimson Crow in 1990. Despite many personnel adjustments, Altan’s popularity continuing to grow. Simply as it appeared as though these were going to break through commercially, Kennedy was identified as having cancer. On the next 3 years, he well balanced chemotherapy with shows and recordings using the group. His last performances emerged during Altan’s USA tour of Might and June 1994. He passed away three months later on, six days timid of his 38th birthday. Went to by a huge selection of music artists from Ireland, THE UK, and america, Kennedy’s funeral services happened in Donegal and broadcast nationally by Radio Na Gaeltachta. He was buried in Derrbeg, Region Donegal.
