Biography
Within the mid-’50s Frank Perowsky remaining Des Moines, IA, for NEW YORK to review calrinet at Julliard and absorb the city’s enormous jazz scene at such clubs as Birdland, where he witnessed performances by such luminaries as Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, Art Blakey, and much more. Pursuing his graduation, Perowsky started touring using the big rings of Lee Castle and Woody Herman and documenting with Les and Larry Elgart, Tito Rodriguez, and Johnny Richards. After marrying in 1963 he resolved down a little and worked like a freelance musician in the brand new York region, playing Broadway displays, nightclubs, and concerts with a number of the era’s greatest: Peggy Lee, Sarah Vaughan, Billy Eckstine, Stan Getz, and much more. In successive years he continuing playing music, documenting albums with Expenses Watrous’ big music group within the ’70s and touring with such heavyweights as Roland Hanna and Liza Minnelli. In old age he founded his personal label, Jazzkey, and viewed his child, Ben, blossom right into a effective jazz drummer. In 2002 the father-and-son duo collaborated on Bop on Pop, a trio recording also offering organist Sam Yahel that Perowsky released on Jazzkey.
