Frank Kimbrough

One of the most individualistic acoustic pianists from the ’80s, ’90s, and 2000s, Frank Kimbrough can be an “inside/outdoors” improviser whose major influences range between Expenses Evans and Keith Jarrett to Cecil Taylor, Paul Bley, and Andrew Hill. Kimbrough can play with as very much beauty as Evans or Jarrett, but it doesn’t prevent him from frequently acquiring it “outside” and acknowledging Taylor’s improvements. The pianist was created and elevated in NEW YORK, where he discovered to appreciate a multitude of jazz developing up, and do some gigs around Chapel Hill before shifting to Washington, D.C., in 1980. Through the yr he resided in D.C., Kimbrough led his personal trio and performed several hard bop gigs with Webster Adolescent and Buck Hill. When Expenses Evans passed away in Sept 1980, Kimbrough became a member of Anthony Braxton to get a two-night gig spending tribute towards the important pianist. Kimbrough shifted to NY in 1981, and he began documenting under his personal name five years later on. Two cassette-only produces he do for Mapleshade, 1986’s Celebrity Crossed Enthusiasts (an unaccompanied single piano work) and 1987’s Two times Visions (a duet with drummer Steve Williams), are out of printing, although Mapleshade released his 1988 trio documenting, Lonely Female, on Compact disc in 1995. The 1990s discovered Kimbrough keeping occupied by teaching at NY School and playing being a sideman in Maria Schneider’s big music group (which he’s been an associate of since 1993) as well as the quartet of saxophonist Ted Nash. Kimbrough in addition has been an integral person in the Herbie Nichols Task, a music group that has devoted itself to playing and documenting the music of the fantastic but underexposed pianist Herbie Nichols. The music group continues to be directed by bassist Ben Allison, who highlighted Kimbrough over the Project’s Like Is Proximity record on Soul Take note and his very own albums Seven Arrows and Medication Wheel. Both musicians may also be co-founders from the Jazz Composers Collective. Founded in 1992, the group features music by forward-thinking composers. In 1998, Igmod released Chant, a Compact disc filled with recordings Kimbrough manufactured in 1992 and 1997; Saturn’s Kid appeared a calendar year later, accompanied by 2000’s Noumena. A cooperation with Joe Locke led to the heady The Willow, released on Omnitone in 2001. The live record Quickening premiered two years down the road the same label. Since that time, Kimbrough has transferred to the Palmetto label, launching Lullabluebye and Play in 2004 and 2006, respectively.
