Although he started his musical profession playing alto saxophone, Foster demonstrated commendable foresight in choosing to improve to tenor saxophone and flute, declaring his purpose of pursuing his own route and not the main one sign-posted by Charlie Parker. In the past due 40s he used many like-minded spirits within the Detroit region, included in this Wardell Grey and Snooky Little, before serving within the military. In 1953 he became a member of Count number Basie and became a substantial person in the music group as soloist, arranger and composer (‘Shiny Stockings’). After 11 years with Basie he became a member of Elvin Jones, another from the music artists with whom he previously performed in Detroit early in his profession. Within the middle-60s he shaped a big music group which continued to try out intermittently on the following 10 years. He also used the Thad Jones – Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra and co-led a little group with previous Basie section-mate Frank Wess. Within the middle-80s Foster started an extended stint as frontman for the reactivated Basie music group, with which he toured the united states and European countries. Foster’s arrangements have got always proven his affinity with post-war big-band composing and his work with Basie was a key point in the achievement of this particular edition from the band. Like a soloist, Foster’s early decision to visit his own method paid dividends as he created a distinctively acerbic firmness which, while reflecting a knowledge of his contemporaries, was quite definitely his own.
